About

Dr. Mary Smyth is an Irish multi-disciplinary animator and researcher living in the midlands. Her practice includes 2D and mixed media animation, illustration and participatory work with youth. She works as a Public Art & Engagement Coordinator in Roscommon Arts Office. Her PhD (Technological University of the Shannon) investigated representations of addiction & recovery in animated short films. As part of this research she directed two animations: 'The Click (2021)' & 'Components of Recovery (2022)' both receiving an award and screening at Waterford Film Festival, Still Voices Film Festival and Reel Recovery Film Festival Los Angeles among others. In 2017, she graduated with a first-class, B.A.(Hons) Degree in Animation & Motion Design at Limerick School of Art & Design and her graduate film 'Twilight Tales' screened at several national and international film festivals including Cork and Kerry Film Festival, Italy, Malta, Romania and Ukraine.
